K'gari is the largest sand island on earth, and yet a rainforest grows on it — trees more than sixty metres tall rooted in nothing but dune sand. That contradiction has drawn geologists, botanists and travellers to the Queensland coast for well over a century. The Butchulla people have occupied the island for at least 5,000 years, and their name for it, K'gari, means paradise in the Butchulla language — the island was formally returned to that name in 2023. Logging began in the 1860s and continued until 1991, when the last satinay and kauri pine were cut.
